I am sure Gordon Brown will have read the advice of Adrian Williams concerning Afghanistan (Star Letters, November 18th). Does anyone seriously believe that Mr Brown is driven by anything other than a genuine concern for the safety of British citizens at home and abroad? I am all for bringing our troops home, but it is a mistake to believe that the threat from international terrorism will simply go away with their departure.
Afghanistan under the Taliban was a fundamentalist state which aided and abetted some of the world's most ruthless men. Scores of terrorists passed through al-Qaida training camps to be despatched around the world. We cannot allow the Taliban to regain ground. If Mr Brown needs any advice let it be this: Keep your nerve and hold fast.
The task our troops face on Afghanistan is a difficult and dangerous one and the death of just one of our troops is one too many. However, the consequences of a failed state in Afghanistan may be immeasurable - both in terms of the instabilty of the region and in terms of the innocent blood spilled by al-Qaida terrorists world-wide.
