I do smile sometimes. Particularly when watching the unedifying spectacle of the Sudanese and Venazualan representatives at the Copenahagen climate change summit lecturing the developed world on morality.
Both Sudan and Venazuala are hostage to two of the most repressive governments on the face of the earth. Yet here we have our government debasing itself, prostrate at the feet of these totalitarian states. I wouldn't give the Sudanese or Venazuelan governments one penny, much less Billions of dollars, until such time that they respect human rights and cease in the brutal repression of anyone that dares to criticise their appalling record.
The Darfur conflict in Sudan was nothing short of government-backed genocide where mass-murder and rape were used as routine instruments of war. That was in 2003. Today, if I wrote these words in that country I would be a risk of a severe beating or worse. To have these despots lecturing Europe about the crimes of the Holocaust and the contemporary western "mentality" that lead to it, is the stuff of sick-making hypocrisy.
Indeed, closer to home, what lessons can we take from the marauding thugs who sought to disrupt the democratic business of the heads of government in Copenhagen and, when denied entry into the conference venue, engaged in pitched battles with the Police instead? More than 600 of these people were arrested, most for acts of violence.
Just like the rantings of the Sudanese, we should take no notice of the demands of a baying mob. Climate change or no climate change, just what future is there for humanity when the demands of mass-murderers and mob-rule are accorded equivalence with the needs and expectations of democratic nations such as Britain and the US?
