I have received the following e-mail from The Gorge Parish Council which sums up Telford & Wrekin Councils approach to pot holes and much else around the borough: A quick fix.
At the last Parish Council meeting on the 19th January 2010 the Parish Councillors reported several potholes to me for report to TWC. Some of these potholes I regularly report I would say at least bi monthly. Each time they are filled it lasts for a very short time and the hole gets bigger next time. The best example of this is a crater between the incline Bridge and Legges Way in Coalport. I have reported this pothole on a number of occasions over the last 12 months. Each time it gets larger.
Whilst The Parish Council recognises the problems the roads in The Gorge cause with instability and high usage the standard of work for the pothole filling is not helping. I am sure officers and Councillors alike know the problems faced in the Gorge with roads not designed for modern use.
There are other examples but the one mentioned above is certainly the worst. I resisted informing the Shropshire Star last week when they were looking for large potholes because they had already printed a photo on in Waterloo Street in the paper. I felt emphasising more in the The Gorge would not help either residents or in fact the economy of The Gorge.
There are other major problems along The Lloyds with again the same potholes needing filling on a regular basis and whilst the problems are different along Salthouse Road to the office here the potholes really do not help residents and visitors to Maws Craft Centre. There is an acceptance the road will be a different shape each day but the potholes on the bits that don’t move are making the road difficult to use. I do not report these that regularly because Highways staff monitor the road on a regular basis.
The Gorge Parish Council would like to ask Telford and Wrekin Council’s Cabinet and senior highways officers to reconsider their policy on pot hole filling to ensure a more robust job is done.

i can't help but feel that a shoddy job is done when repairing pot holes and the problem is, no one checks to ensure the job is done correctly, even if its only a reasonable sample. an officer said to me that they cannot afford the quality of work carried out, I can't help but feel that we cannot afford not to check on contractors work. |
