Gordon Brown has visited UK troops in Afghanistan just hours after ex-military chiefs branded him "disingenuous" in the evidence he gave to the Iraq Inquiry.

The Prime Minister flew into Camp Bastion to thank some of the 4,000 British forces involved in Operation Mosthtarak - last month's assault on Taliban strongholds in Helmand Province.

Mr Brown said: "My visit is an opportunity to say thank you to the thousands of British, Afghan and international troops involved and to the dozens o...  Continue Reading >>

  "UKIP = Useless!" Posted on 5th March 2010 @ 11:29:42

Comment: Here we have an MEP, Nikki Sinclaire, who has devoted 16 years of her life to the UKIP cause, only be discarded from the party for having the temerity to question the party's Anti-Semitic links within the European Parliament. Just Google the name Nikki Sinclaire to understand the torrent of hatred that has been unleashed towards her.

On account of these developments and however much I like their Telford candidate, Denis Allen, who I have known for years, I cannot vote for UKIP. UKIP ...  Continue Reading >>

The leader of the Liberal Democrats moved to reassure markets on Wednesday that his party would not destabilise any minority government after an election. Skip related content

The Lib-Dems would hold the balance of power if either Labour or the Conservatives fail to secure an overall majority in the election that has to be held by early June.

The prospect of a "hung parliament," with no single dominant political force, has worried some investors who think it could lead to a weak administra...  Continue Reading >>

'Inertia' crippling UK counter-terrorism strategy

10 hours 9 mins ago

Britain's preparation for major terrorist threats is being crippled by "institutional inertia", an influential committee of MPs said today.

In a report on the government's response to terror attacks, the home affairs committee expressed concern about government department's ability to adapt to an ever-changing threat.

A lack of political will has hindered the institution of valuable reforms, MPs found, including re...  Continue Reading >>

The Conservative lead over Labour has been cut to seven points, according to a new poll.

The ComRes survey for The Independent is the latest in a series of polls to put David Cameron's advantage below 10 points, and raises the prospect of a hung Parliament after the general election.

The new poll put the Tories on 38 per cent (unchanged since a similar poll last month), Labour on 31 per cent (up two points), the Liberal Democrats on 19 per cent (no change), and other parties on 12 per cen...  Continue Reading >>

Buying a typical home cost £2,500 half a century ago

Buying a home costs four times as much as it did half a century ago once inflation is stripped out, according to research by Halifax.

Average house prices, allowing for inflation, have increased 273 per cent in the past 50 years.

It means a typical home could be bought for £2,507 in 1959, the equivalent to £43,713 in today’s money.

But home buyers are actually paying significantly more to buy an equivalent property now, needing...  Continue Reading >>

Comment: I welcome these comments from Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats. I was talking to a long-standing Conservative activist the other day. Like me, she is disillusioned with the Tories, citing their "arrogance" as a major factor. Also like me, she cannot bring herself to vote Labour. I did vote for a Labour candidate once - for my long-standing friend and colleague David Edwards at Cuckoo Oak in 1999. He proved to be a very good councillor and helped me with a number of issues...  Continue Reading >>

Iran test-fires missile amid nuclear tension

Iran successfully test-fired a long-range, improved Sejil 2 missile on Wednesday,
state television reported, in an announcement that added to tension with the West.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the launch underlined the case for
tougher sanctions against Tehran.

Al Alam, Iran's Arabic-language satellite television, said the two-stage, solid fuel
Sejil missile had a longer range than the Islamic Republic's Shahab model.

Asda claims to be offering the country's best-value Christmas dinner at 11 pounds a headA supermarket chain is claiming to offer the country's "best-value" Christmas dinner at a credit-crunching £11.

"UKIP offered Tories election deal in return for EU vote " Posted on 28th November 2009 @ 08:29:12

COMMENT: Since it emerged out of the Anti-Federalist League following the ratification of the Masstrict Treaty in 1991, UKIP has always seen itself as "the Tory Party Mk2". These latest revelations from UKIP's new leader come as no surprise and reveal what most seasoned UKIP watchers have always known: that UKIP is a one-trick pony.

A back-room deal with the Tories? And then what? UKIP ceases to be, leaving the door, not simply ajar, but wide open to the BNP and other nasty populist groups t...  Continue Reading >>
